Somatic Medicine is an integrated and holistic approach to naturopathic medicine, mental health, and embodiment. Developed by Monel Chang, it is an experiential study based on the embodiment and application of interoceptive, physiological, psychophysical and metabolic principles, utilizing movement, touch and mind. The practice of Somatic Medicine is a mindful co-creative process in which embodiment of the condition is explored in the context of self-discovery and medical education.

Hi, I'm Monel
I am a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and live in Portland, Oregon. I provide non-patient phone consultations for individuals and practitioners nationally and internationally.
I obtained my ND degree from National University of Natural Medicine, where I also received my Masters of Science in Integrative Mental Health (MSiMH). Before medical school, I extensively studied somatic movement therapy, most notably with Emilie Conrad of Continuum Movement and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen of Body-Mind Centering. I studied Craniosacral therapy with Gary Strauss of the Life Energy Institute, Contact Improvisation at Earthdance Creative Living Project, and Butoh with Oguri of Body Weather Laboratory. These past ten years I have studied the evolving research into the interoceptive system, psychoneuroimmunology, and attachment trauma. That decade of research and learning, combined with my personal experience with embodiment, reshaped the way I approach mind-body medicine and created my current practice.
On my free time I enjoy time in nature, deepening the connection to my Korean heritage, and practicing performance art such as butoh, clown, and contact improvisation.
